FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: “I have trouble receiving KCSN at home and sometimes when driving. Why?”

A: KCSN’s primary coverage area is the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, and West Los Angeles. The signal gets weaker beyond that.

To hear KCSN better in your home:

1. Try streaming us on-line at KCSN.org. You can listen on your computer, iPhone, iTouch, Blackberry Storm, or Blackberry Tour. The station sounds quite good when docked into a system with stereo speakers.

Click here for more details on how to listen on your phone or mobile device. (insert link to our mobile page)

2. Most tabletop or stereo receivers have a connection point – usually on the back panel – for an external antenna. In fact, a small dipole antenna is often included with the receiver packaging (if not, Radio Shack sells these antennas for less than $5, the part number is 42–2385). Connecting this antenna will usually significantly improve reception.

Our signal comes from Oat Mountain, in the northwest San Fernando Valley. Using a road map for a visual reference, one would point the antenna slightly northwest of the intersection of the 405 and 118 freeways.

To hear KCSN better in your car:

Try streaming KCSN through an iPhone, iTouch, Blackberry Storm, or Blackberry Tour. Many new cars allow you to plug your mobile device into an auxiliary jack and listen through the car speakers. The iPhone and iTouch have accessories that will transmit the audio from your device to your car stereo.

Q: “What is HD Radio?

A: HD Radio is a digital technology that allows radio stations to transmit more than one programming service over the same frequency. It’s not unlike your cable service sending you multiple channels over one wire.

KCSN has three channels streaming of 88.5 FM. You need an HD radio to hear all three.

1. Our main stream, with AAA and Americana music, can be heard using any FM Radio.

2. Our HD-1 stream broadcasts the exact same programming as our main FM signal but with better audio quality.

3. Our HD-2 stream broadcasts KCSN Classical 24/7.

HD Radios are available for the home and car. Click here to buy an HD Radio and have a portion of the proceeds benefits KCSN.
